I turned my side hustle into a full-time job in 7 months thanks to 4 smart money decisions I made at the beginning

I turned my side hustle into a full-time job in 7 months thanks to 4 smart money decisions I made at the beginningI turned my side hustle into a full-time job in 7 months thanks to 4 smart money decisions I made at the beginningIn November of 2018, I began a freelance writing side hustle. Ill never forget the thrill of landing my first client. Somebody welches actually willing topay meto write about personal finance.Honestly, the pay was lousy but at the time I could care less. I had a legitimate side hustle writing about personal finance.Seven months later, this past May, I quit my day job to become a full-time freelance writer.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIts been a crazy ride to say the least. I never would have thought that this transition could have happened so quickly. But a few money decisions I made helped to make it possible.1. I built up my emergency fundAs a persona l finance nerd, Ive preached to so many people about the importance of having an emergency fund. But the experiences of this past year have caused me to see first-hand what a huge deal an emergency fund really is.I knew that once I launched full-time, there were going to be ups and downs when it came to my monthly income. I wanted to be able to weather the storms without tripling my blood presaya.Over the past seven years of our marriage, my wife and I have always tried to save at least 10% of our income in our rainy day fund. And whenever wed get unexpected money like from a gift, bonus, or tax refund, wed try to put a large portion of it away in our Wells Fargo savings account as well. With just behauptung simple steps, we were able to save up about four months worth of living expenses. That was a good start. But it was in the next step where we were really able to kick our savings rate int overdrive.2. I saved all my side hustle incomeIf youre not planning on quitting your day job, then feel free to use your side hustle income on whatever youd like. But for me, I knew I wanted to turn my side hustle into a full-time job. And for that reason, I resisted the urge to spend any of the money that I brought in from November to May.Instead, that money went straight into our savings account, increasing our savings to over a years worth of living expenses. Of all the personal finance decisions I made, I think this one was the fruchtwein important.Ill be honest. Sometimes it was really hard to not touch that money.I was waking up every morning writing from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and then working my day job from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. And then sometimes writing again from 10 p.m. to midnight. It was exhausting and I wasnt getting to experience any immediate reward for my labor. I was often tempted to just sit back and enjoy some of this extra money that we all-of-a-sudden had lying around. But with every check that I deposited into my account, I felt more confident that Id be able to take care of my family no matter what even after leaving the security of a salaried job.As it turns out, the freelance writing business is doing great and I dont think were going to need to touch any of that money for living expenses. So were now planning to use some of it towards a rental property and move the rest into a high-yield savings account like AllyorWealthfront.3. I invested in myselfWhile I didnt use any of my side hustle income on regular expenses, I did spend money on things that would help me grow my writing career. In October, I spent $400 on a ticket to a personal finance media conference. It ended up being the best $400 Ive ever spent because the vast majority of my clients have come a result of connections I made there.Later on, at the end of November, I bought a writing course for $200 that a fellow writer recommended. Again, it was worth every penny because it taught me the ins and outs of what it takes to be a professional writer. For someone who hates to spend money on himself, I felt a twinge of guilt when I clicked the buy button on that ticket and the course. But, looking back, I dont regret them one bit.Dont ever be afraid to invest in you.4. I waited to launch out full-time until my side hustle was earning more than my day jobBy the time I stepped down from my day job, I was already bringing in (slightly) more income from my writing side hustle. And remember, this was while only being able to allocate around 15-20 hours a week to writing. With this in mind, I felt confident that Id only increase my income once I was writing full-time.Again, this helped make leaving my day job a nearly stress-free decision.I should point that I dont necessarily think that everyone needs to be making more money from their side hustle than their day job before they launch out full-time. But a good rule of thumb would be to wait until youre side hustle is bringing in at least half of the income of your day job.The bottom line is that you dont want to laun ch out too early. Even if youre chomping at the bit to launch out full-time, make sure the numbers look solid first. If they dont, hang in there and stay patient until they do.This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Using Facebook as a work distraction hurts your mental health

Using facebook inc as a work distraction hurts your mental healthUsing Facebook as a work distraction hurts your mental healthIts a habit all too many of us have whenever we have a little downtime during the day, we may check Facebook to like our familys baby photos, our friends political opinions, or the latest cute cat pictures. The only dicke bretter bohren mssen a scientific study shows that checking Facebook hits your mental health every time you use it - and the more you use it, the more depressed youll be.Astudyin theAmerican Journal of Epidemiologyshows just how much the social media platform affects our mental health.According to a write-up in the Harvard Business Review by the studys authors, overall, our results showed that, while real-world social networks were positively associated with overall well-being, the use of Facebook was negatively associated with overall well-being. These results were particularly strong for mental health most measures of Facebook use in one yea r predicted a decrease in mental health in a later year, they wrote. While this certainly isnt the first time people havestudied this concept, this study continues to shed light on why the platform is actually harmful during work hours, when you need your mood and sense of positive progress at their strongest.Dont rely on Facebook to feel good about yourselfPart of the reason Facebook ends up being more harmful than other social networks that may be similar we check Facebook far more often. Chances are, if you use Facebook, you checkit more than once a day.In 2016, Pew Research Center reportedthat 76% of Facebook users said they check it every day- 55% check the social media site multiple times per day and 22% about once every day. In 2015, 70% of users said they check it every day.Thats a lot of exposure. The study in theAmerican Journal of Epidemiologytook a look at information on 5,208 people over three years, examining social network measures, in combination with objective measure s of Facebook use.The researchers studied different factors of well-being, including self-reported mental health, life satisfaction and body-mass index, or BMI. They examined Facebook usage in terms of clicking links, liking what others had posted, and participants making their own posts.Facebook makes you lonelierThe report said that since people having trouble in the well-being department may be more likely to seek solace or attempt to alleviate loneliness by excessively using Facebook in the first place, the links between Facebook usage and jeopardized well-being could result from that.Having and socializing with real-life friends, face to face, was a key to higher life satisfaction- using Facebook was linked to less of this quality.According to their model, a 1-standard-deviation increase in the amount of likes clicked, or links clicked or position updates was linked to a decrease of 5%8% of a standard deviation in self-reported mental health. Both well-being and mental health t ook a hit when it came to the measures of Facebook usage. Liking peoples posts and clicking on links jeopardized well-being, while the number of status updates was linked to decreases in mental health. The negative aspects of using the platform were comparable to or more than what resulted from good things that happened with people offline, which the researchers said suggests a possible tradeoff between offline and online relationships.Although using Facebook seemed to bring down well-being, the researchers couldnt say specifically how.The data seems to say that how much time you spend on Facebook matters, not just what you do there - which contradicts past research. Its a mystery still to be solved.Facebook, drainer of batteries and life forceThe negative effect of many social networks is that its so easy to compare yourself to others online.A 2014 studyin the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that perhaps, more Facebook views and/or spending a greater amount of time o n Facebook on a daily basis both allow participants greater opportunity to spontaneously socially compare themselves to their peers, which in turn is associated with an increase in daily depressive symptoms. The research consisted of two small-scale studies, the first with 180 people and the second with 152 people.Additionally, it turns out that using the Facebook app on your cell has an enormous effect on how long it lasts between charges- in an Inc.com article, John Koetsierreported that the Facebook app killed off a whopping 47% inhis phones battery life.Next time you openthe Facebook app atlunch, think ofthe toll it could be taking your mind- and phone.

In the office satire Severance, workplace routine literally kills

In the office satire 'Severance,' workplace routine literally kills In the office satire 'Severance,' workplace routine literally kills For those of us who have felt trapped in jobs we hate, the walking dead in Ling Ma’s new dystopian novel “Severance” may seem all too familiar. In Ma’s satire of a world like ours, the victims who get fatally infected by Shen Fever get stuck in a zombie-like state and are doomed to repeat actions they did in life. They are not driven by a bloodthirsty need for brains, but their mundane routines. Retail workers keep folding clothes, office drones keep typing at their desks, families keep setting the table for dinner. More unsettling than a violent zombie is a villain you cannot outrun - the one that comes from within your own mind. “Shen Fever being a disease of remembering, the fevered are trapped indefinitely in their memories,” the Asian American narrator of the novel, Candace Chen, explains. “But what is the difference between the fevered and us?” It’s the grand question each survivor faces as they Google 7 stages of grief and Maslow’s pyramid before infrastructures collapse. The book follows what kind of life would you seek if an infectious disease wiped out the world’s population and you were among the survivors spared. You are suddenly freed from the drudgery of work, but now you are forced to reckon with what you actually want. Ma got the inspiration to write the book through her own experiences with an office job. She started writing “Severance” at her desk in the weeks before a mass layoff as she watched colleagues who had been at the company for decades lose their jobs. “It was a fun apocalyptic short story but there was an anger to it,” Ma told Ladders. “I realized that the anger had to do with notions of work, and I wrote it as a novel to tap in and see where that anger might lead me.” On what keeps people in jobs they hate In one of the darkly comedic chapters, Candace, our Millennial narrator, agrees to a big payout in exchange to keep working at her Manhattan office, an office that is increasingly deserted as employees flee the city in hopes of not catching Shen Fever. The employees that remain with Candace are the ambitious young ones like her. They dress up in button-ups and still squabble over office politics even when upper management is gone.“Everyone was keeping score,” Candace notes. “Like who would get to compile and send the weekly productivity reports to management, who arrived on time and who arrived late, who heeded corporate policy by wearing those hideous N95 masks, who was taking the initiative for restocking the coffee filters.” Later, as the office clears out entirely, Candace, the remaining survivor, moves and sets up camp in an executive’s office. Without a family to go to, she stays moored to the routine of a day job. In her Chinese mother’s dying words to her, she told Candace that her goal was for Candace to be of use. “There’s something about this maybe immigrant imperative to be useful, and to be successful, that comes into play when she remains in the office that long,” Ma said.   When Candace’s boyfriend Jonathan urges her to quit her job and leave New York City with him, their difference in work philosophies leads to their breakup. “You live your life idealistically. You think it’s possible to opt out of the system. No regular income, no health insurance. You quit jobs on a dime,” Candace thinks at him on their last night together. “You think this is freedom but I still see the bare, painstakingly cheap way you live, the scrimping and saving, and that is not freedom either.” On our own Shen Fever loops  It does not take a worldwide plague to relate to the frustration of not having who you are in your head fit the version of you going to work.   For Ma, the book allowed her to explore her own reasons for overstaying at her office job. “Part of writing this novel was trying to figure out what’s keeping me tied to this job. Everyone could see the writing on the wall. Other employees were finding new jobs, but for some reason I never did,” Ma said. “I really enjoyed my coworkers. I did like the lifestyle that I had built around that job. But I also knew that because the company was not advancing, because they were making layoffs, that it was not a sustainable lifestyle.” “Severance” is a call to action against letting the comforts of rituals stop you from going after what you want - whether that’s leaving a toxic job or escaping the apocalypse. Habits can anchor and sink you. “Severance” poses questions about what actions our minds will remember us for. You do not want your  Shen Fever loop behavior to be you scrolling through your phone, checking your emails even in death.     “I don’t mean to say that routines are a bad thing,” Ma said. “But there is a certain point where routine can kill.”

How to Be More Inclusive in Your Career - The Muse

How to Be More Inclusive in Your Career - The Muse How to Be More Inclusive in Your Career Picture this: You’re at an event, standing by yourself in a corner, wishing anyone would walk over and start a conversation. Or, if that visual didn’t do anything for you, picture this instead: You’re new to an office and would give your first paycheck to be invited to grab coffee with the group who heads out at 3 PM every day. Feeling excluded sucks. And while you can’t control how other people treat you, you can control how you make others feel. So when you’re in the power to be the inclusive person- by all means, be it! (And hey, it’s probably not too bad for your karma.) So, how can you start today? Here are five instances in which you can easily include people. 1. When You See Someone Alone at a Networking Event OK, this one seems easy, but if it were as simple as saying, “Hey, join us!” more people would do it. Sometimes it can be awkward to start a conversation with someone you don’t know, because well, the person could turn out to be awkward. Or worse, you try to initiate, and that person shuts you down. Turns out he’s waiting for his friend to arrive and isn’t looking for small talk. Regardless of the potential outcome (and trust me, you can survive five minutes of cringe-worthy conversation), you should do the right thing and approach the person standing alone. You don’t even need to brainstorm ideas- the easiest place to start is simply to talk about the event you’re at. Good speaker? Say that. Awesome buffet? That’s also totally OK to bring up. 2 . When You Hear There’s a New Employee in the Office You’d be surprised how far a mid-morning coffee or post-work happy hour invite can go for someone who’s brand new to the office. Learning a job’s responsibilities is already intimidating enough without having to worry about making friends- so having a friendly face propose grabbing lunch together can make a big difference. Bonus: By taking time to do this one simple act of kindness, you’re setting yourself up in the office to be known as a leader who takes initiative. Or, double bonus, a mentor who’s willing to take people under her wing. 3. When You Get Assigned to Lead a Project and Pick Your Team When you have something new on your plate and need a hand, it’s easy to turn to the same reliable people to help you out. However, taking on something new presents the opportunity to expand your circle and get some new creative minds involved. So, the next time you find yourself in this situation, reach out to someone else. While you don’t have to turn over gigantic responsibilities to a colleague you haven’t worked with before, delegating a few small parts never hurts. And hey, this person could end up being your best collaborator ever. 4. When You’re on Social Media It takes so little effort to be inclusive on social media- yet so few people make an effort to welcome participants who are new to the conversation. Say hi to new followers. Tag people you think would like to be involved in what you’re talking about. Share others’ content. By doing these very small things, you’re expanding your circle and making other people feel welcome in the conversation. Also, on a selfish note, it probably won’t hurt your follower count to become known as someone who actively seeks out new voices and opinions to share. 5. When You Have the Chance to Introduce People There are a million ways to be more inclusive by way of introductions. For example, if someone in your department needs help on a project, offer to set him or her up with someone he or she might not know from another team. Or, if you want to take this out of the office setting, you can do the same thing when a friend asks for help re-designing her online portfolio or filling a position at her company. Take the time to go through your network and think about people beyond your usual recommendations. All it takes on your end is an email suggestion to make someone else feel valued and important. By being more inclusive, you’re creating a more positive environment while also upping your street cred. What’s not to love? Photo of friends meeting courtesy of Shutterstock.

5 Ways to Show You are a Leader in a Job Interview

5 Ways to Show You are a Leader in a Job Interview 5 Ways to Show You are a Leader in a Job Interview If you’ve been reading through job listings or employment themed articles lately (maybe on the Simply Hired Blog) you’ve probably come across the term “leadership.”  More than just a descriptor for a political figure or industry head, leadership in the career world also entails a kind of magical ability to get things done that can be incredibly valuable for employers looking to bring in new talent.  If it’s such an asset to companies, then, just how do you go about demonstrating your leadership skills in the interview or job application setting? Read on for our list of five ways to show you are a leader during your upcoming job interview. Discuss Past Leadership Accomplishments The old saying goes that the most successful among the business elite lead by example.  This universal truth goes double in the case of demonstrating your leadership capabilities during a job interview.   Instead of telling your interviewer that you have leadership skills, come up with a series of concrete examples based on your past personal and work experiences.  While your professional skill set is incredibly important for immediate applicability to the position, personal accomplishments shouldn’t be discounted either. If you’ve successfully led an office team in rolling out a new project, work that in along with your individual role in planning, organizing and implementation.  If on the weekends you also lead volunteer activities, coach youth sports, or otherwise act as a leader in your community, this will also be a plus to your potential employer. Well rounded leadership skills demonstrated through actual experiences will have a much bigger impact than words and assurances alone ever could. State Everything Quantitatively Sure, you may think that your project or position was an overwhelming success, but if there’s anything modern politics and entertainment news has taught us is that it’s easy to wade into hyperbole in this area.  Instead of stating that you were a great role model or leader, put your accomplishments into cold hard numbers and timelines. If an accomplishment resulted in X dollars increase in revenue for your prior employer or saw a Y uptick in sales, be sure to communicate that.   Similarly, be sure to mention the number of people involved in the team you led and lay down timelines in weeks, months and years. This will allow your prospective employer to more easily relate that “huge” accomplishment into real figures that can be applied to their vision of your role in the new position. Demonstrate an Ability to Act Decisively Being a great leader isn’t always about the end goal or result.  Sure, large projects and accomplishments look great on a resume, but it’s the smaller day in and out tasks that will make up the bulk of your position.  Be sure to illustrate your ability to make everyday decisions in addition to communicating the larger successes. Managing one-off customer service issues or dealing with minor but impactful crises demonstrates an ability to act independently in a confidence-building and trustworthy manner that is important to employers looking for leaders to help guide their business.  Spend some time coming up with several examples of everyday leadership and be sure to work these in, in addition to the larger or longer-term accomplishments. Speak Calmly and Confidently All the work experience and past history of leadership skills won’t mean a whole lot to your potential employer if you don’t exude these qualities during the interview itself.  Natural leaders have a calm, easy and confident manner to them that shows whatever their surroundings. While much of this will be your own internal personality, there are several ways to prepare to act like a leader come interview day.   Practice potential interview questions in order to avoid any missteps or awkward pauses in conversation. If you’re interviewing for a new or slightly different job title, be sure to study up on any background knowledge, rules, or procedures that may come up during your interview conversation.  Coming off as an expert in your field not only boosts confidence and performance, it also increases your prospective employer’s impression of your ability to act as a leader in both your field and new position. Show Off Your Passion One of the key characteristics of leaders is the ability to step out in front of the crowd.  With this in mind, it’s important to display a passion for your career and the position you may be interviewing for.  At some point during the interview process, you will inevitably be asked: “why do you want to work for this company?” The ability to respond with a set of ready answers that demonstrate your commitment to your field and your excitement for the potential opportunity will score big points with your new employers.   Before your interview, perform some basic due diligence on both the position and company.  Look at items such as corporate culture, background, company history, values and more. Finding ways to communicate that youre excited about the opportunity to work for a company with these ideals as they match up with your own is a key indicator of leadership capabilities that will go a long ways towards helping your convert an interview into a job offer.

Anthony Weiner Can the Congressman Recover from a Workplace Scandal

Anthony Weiner Can the Congressman Recover from a Workplace Scandal Anthony Weiner Can the Congressman Recover from a Workplace Scandal By now everyone knows the tale of New York Congressman Anthony Weiner.   Mr. Weiner’s overexposure has many calling for his resignation including President Obama. While we hope that you never have this type of faux pas in  the workplace it forces the question “would you resign after a major flub?” Ladders columnist Scott Ginsberg says, in his article, 6 Face-Saving Antidotes to Awkward Situations, the key to getting out of a tight spot   in the workplace is to change your focus. Can Anthony Weiner do that? “So, how ’bout those Yankees?” might work… An apology likely won’t help Weiner either. Nor can he correct his mistake, it’s not like he told a white lie on his resume. So what can be done for the Congressman? Can he, or you, for that matter   survive such a major blow to his professional image?

How to Tell Your Network Youre Looking for a Job

How to Tell Your Network Youre Looking for a Job How to Tell Your Network Youre Looking for a Job If you're job searching, you've probably heard that one of the most effective things you can do is to use your network of connections to find job leads and make connections with hiring managers. But how do you actually reach out to your network, and what do you say? Here are five keys to doing it right.1. Contact people individually, not en masse. It might be tempting to send out a mass email, letting everyone know all at once that you're looking. And realistically, if that's the only way you're going to get it done, then do that, because it's better than not contacting people at all. But it will be far more effective if you send individual emails to people instead of one group email â€" because people are generally much more inclined to help when they feel like you're reaching out to them directly. After all, think about how you feel in similar shoes: If you get a mass email from a friend asking a group of people to, say, donate to a charity she's supporting, you may or may not spend much time thinking about her request. But if that friend instead reaches out to you personally, you will probably feel more responsible for really thinking over the request and maybe acting on it. When people see that they're one of many being asked, there's a diffusion of responsibility, a feeling that others will be taking care of this, so the urgency is lowered. So if you can, do individual emails â€" people will feel more invested.2. Be clear about exactly what you're looking for. Too often, job seekers ask for job search assistance without being clear about what they're looking for. Don't leave anything open to interpretation â€" say that you're looking for work explicitly, and be clear about what types of roles you're interested in.3. Ask directly for what kind of help you'd like. When you ask for assistance, don't say something vague like "let me know if you hear of anything" because many people never pay attention to job openings around them. Instead, be more specific; peop le are much more likely to help if you give them something concrete they can do. For instance, you might ask your neighbor if she can connect you with a hiring manager at her former company, or you might ask your old manager if she'd advise you on the companies you're considering. You can also ask people to think about whether they know anyone it would be helpful for you to talk with, and tell them that you'd be interested in connecting with people even if there's not a suitable opening right now.4. Contact everyone in your network, even if you don't think they would know of any appropriate job openings. Too often, job seekers are hesitant to reach out to people in their network unless they're a hiring manager or connected to a particular company with openings. But it's worth reaching out to your full network, because you never know who might be able to tell you about an opening that you'd be perfect for. (And your chances of being considered for a job go up when you have someone co nnected to the job saying, "Hey, you should really consider Jane, because ___.")5. Don't forget to include your résumé. Sometimes people think it is too forward or presumptuous to include their résumé right off the bat and that they should wait to be asked … but in fact, attaching your résumé will save your contacts from having to write back and request it. Don't be shy about sending it the first time.Alison Green writes the popular Ask a Manager blog, where she dispenses advice on career, job search, and management issues.
